Trace's POV: Detention Scene

This is Trace's point of view during the detention scene.
*May contain spoilers if you haven't completed book one*

“Welcome to detention. As much as it would give me pleasure to sit here and squander the next hour away with you, I have a prior engagement that requires my immediate attention—”

A knock at the door cuts Mr. Gillman off. I look up and see Jemma walk in the room, unassuming like she’s afraid of it. Like she isn’t the prettiest girl in school. My stomach takes a dip.

“You’re late, Miss Blackburn,” says Mr. Gillman, and Jemma’s cheeks turn bright pink. “Surely you appreciate the irony given your current circumstance.”

“Sorry,” she says and grabs a seat at the front of the class.

Mr. Mouthpiece goes on with his speech, but I don’t hear a word of it. I’m staring at her again, and I want to kick myself in the shin for it. I know I need to stay away from her—you know, prolong the inevitable—but it’s getting harder and harder for me to do that. Like the other night at All Saints; the way she looked at me; the way she asked me to sacrifice my life without even knowing it. It was scary how close I came to doing it. Shit, I’d probably run myself into a sword if it meant I could have her look at me that way again.

She peeks over her shoulder and her eyes find me. She makes a face like I’m making her sick or something and puts her head down on the desk.

Forget her, man. Getting close to her is only going to get me killed. I need to get my shit together. I need to stay focused on my plan. People are depending on me—Linley's depending on me. One wrong step and everything falls apart. Let her go. She’s just a girl.

I stretch back in my chair, resolved. Two seconds later, I’m up on my feet, walking across the room to her like I have no control over my legs.

I grab the seat behind her and poke her on the back. She turns around and looks at me with those crystal gray eyes and I swear my day is instantly better.

“Hey,” I say like a lovesick tool.

“Look at you, breaking all your own rules again.”

I bury my smile along with the urge to let her know that I’d break them all for her if she asked me to. “What are you in here for?” I ask, mostly to keep from confessing my weakness for her.

“Oh, you know, the usual. Started a gang, beat up a few kids from Easton. You?”

“Same.”

She laughs and I turn away, trying to focus on something else besides her beautiful lips, or how bad I want to kiss them.

“Heard you’re going to the dance with Caleb.” It makes me sick to even say it. That little shit doesn’t deserve her. No one in this Realm does.

“As friends.”

I like the sound of that but knowing Caleb, that’s doubtful. “Does he know that?”

“Of course he does.” She pauses. “I mean, I think he does. Why? Did he say something?”

“Not really.” I don’t bother mentioning his illicit crowing in the locker room today. “He just likes to get under my skin.”

“Under your skin?”

“Yeah,” I answer without thinking it through.

“Meaning?”

“Nothing. Forget it.”

“O-kay…So, um, who are you going to the dance with?”

“I’m not,” I say and watch her eyebrows pull together.

“You’re not going?”

“Nope.” I inspect her face to see if there’s any disappointment there.

“Why not? I mean, isn’t this thing supposed to be sort of a big deal around here?”

“You’re spending too much time with Taylor.” She laughs again and it throws me off my game. “Besides, the girl I wanted to take is already going with someone else.” Way off.

“That’s too bad.”

“It’s probably for the best,” I say, staring at her lips again.

“Yeah,” she agrees like she knows what a bad idea we are. “Probably.”

We’re probably the worst idea since Romeo and Juliet drank the poison. I need to stay far away from her. Then again, what's a couple of hours going to hurt? It’s all about the dose, right? “I’ve been thinking about that trip we talked about the other day.” I wait for her to catch on. “I decided to take you.” I watch her eyes round out in excitement and realize I could spent my life trying to recreate that look.

“But what about the um…obstacles?” she asks.

“I’ve got it covered.”

“And the…risks?”

“I’ve weighed them out.”

“Are you for real?” she asks with a smile that sets my damned life on fire.

I nod because it’s all I could do.

“When?”

“I was thinking Friday night.”

She looks at me like she’s annoyed with me, like she knows what I’m up to. “Very funny. Friday night is the dance.”

“I know.”

“Why Friday?” she asks, needling me with those beautiful, curious eyes.

“Why not Friday?” I counter.

“Are you trying to stop me from going to the dance with Caleb?”

“Maybe,” I admit, and then instantly regret it. “Or maybe I’m just available that night.”

She moves away from me and runs her eyes all over my face, interrogating me. “Is that really the only time we can do this?”

Her face twists in agony and I hate myself for causing it. I don’t want her to have to make a choice. Making a choice means having to give something up, and I want her to have it all.

“How about tomorrow?” I fold like a cheap lawn chair. As much as I don’t want her going to the dance with Caleb—as much as I’d like to rearrange his face for even asking her—I can’t stomach the look she’s giving me.

“Tomorrow’s good,” she says. The smile is back and it lights up her face like the angel that she is. “Tomorrow’s perfect.”

In that moment, I know I'm royally screwed. There's no going back. I'm sealing my fate like the lid on a coffin. And the scary part is, I don't even care.

  1. Oh gosh!!!!! I love this excerpt :)

So he does love her?! But then why'd he leave her for dead at the enddddddddd. Was he under a spell? Did he just chose his sister over her? Ah so many questions! You should definitely post more excerpts of scenes from Trace's POV, it's so cute. And please please please write the 2nd installment! Can't wait :)

  2. Remember when they were talking hypothetically about bringing back their family, and they both agreed no matter the cost, theyd do anything to bring them back nd he did that he chose to bring back his sister, nd she was what he gave up, he loves her but his devotion to his sister out weighed her.

    1. Well yeah, I thought about that too, but that doesn't explain why he acted as if she was invisible when he betrayed her at the end, the way the scene was described made him sound so heartless and evil! Which SUCKS cuz I really shipped him w/ Jemma. But also, why doesn't he just TAKE the necklace from her? Does it have to be given willingly? & Jemma's sister, she apparently went with Trace to visit Jemma at the hospital, yeah? They must've disagreed on something after that, cuz Jemma ended up having what he wanted, and Tessa gave Jemma the necklace to keep her safe. So Gabriel and Tessa must've not betrayed Jemma..... which means they're not trying to bring back Linely.... I wonder if Nikki was deceived by Trace as well or if they were in cahoot together.... Morgan definitely was in on it bc she had to have lied about the vision of Trace sacraficing himself for Jemma.

    2. Poor Jemma. She sounds like a completely different person by the end of the novel, so heartbroken and betrayed and bent on revenge & saving her friend (which btw I always thought she was going to be the one to betray her, I was so shocked that it was Trace! Guess that's the ambiguity of the word "friend" in the preface lol). Is it wrong that I still hope Jemma & Trace work it out?

    3. (Now I haven't read the second book) I don't think Morgan was in on it. I think Morgan has really envisioned it but it might happen later on in the future yet Jemma thought that was the part that she was talking about he that he would die for her. And I think about you saying how heartless it was for Trace not to look at Jemma as he walked away and seemed cold and heartless I think it's cuz he couldn't face her with what he's done to her because I think he truly does love her but the feeling in the power that he wants to bring back his sister is overthrowing it and he knew that he would have to hurt Jemma in the path. I feel like if he turned around and looked at Jemma that he would give in to her and he just going to have that cuz he needs his sister

  4. I was just reading your book and I was wondering if you are going to write a second one to Inception? I have to say that I read a lot, but your book has to be one of my all time favorite I just absolutely love it, the way you incorporated vampires and angels without making it into one of those cheesy books. Also, I just love reading about Trace and Jemma they have to be one of my favorite couples and the unspoken chemistry they have is what kept me wanting to read more. -JV

    1. Wow, thank you so much! I'm so happy you enjoyed the book, and that you love reading about Jemma and Trace as much as I love writing about them :) Yes, there will definitely be a book 2. I'm working on it as we speak and am hoping to have it out by EARLY 2016. If you haven't already, subscribe to my mailing list (http://eepurl.com/bD4Ur9) so you can be notified when the book is out (or when new POV's are up). Thanks again for reaching out <3

  5. Never. I absolutely NEVER put my opinions out there for authors to read on their blogs, hell I don't even usually check an authors blog about information on the next installment in a series.. But this book had me absolutely enthralled. So much so, that after finishing the book not five minutes ago, I immediately clicked the link to your blog.

You have absolutely nailed it with this book. I'm in love with the characters (though at times even I wanted to smack some damn sense into Jemma's head), the storyline took me for multiple loops (rare, considering I have a knack for seeing where the story is going before it gets there, courtesy of reading too much most likely), and the way in which it was written had me ensnared from the very beginning.

You are a wonderful author, and have done a remarkable job weaving this tale of love, loss, revenge, and personal growth, and I will be one of the first to pre-order the next book when it becomes available (pre-ordering being something I've never actually done before)

    1. Thank you so much for your beautiful message, Alana! I can't tell you how much it means to me. And, of course, I'm thrilled you enjoyed the book and all the little plot twists and turns ;) I hope the second one will be just as entertaining for you. Thank you again for your support, and for reaching out <3

  6. I can't believe it. You managed to shock me. I can't even remember the last time I was actually shocked by a story. I expected the whole 'she's special' thing. I expected the thing with Dominic (I'm thinking it's going to be a Stephan in Vampire Diaries TV show kind of thing). What I didn't expect was the switcheroo you did with Trace. I don't believe for a second it's him now, not after reading this POV. But when I finished the book, I truly thought she got played. I hope I'm not wrong. I hope he's not the callous version we saw at the end of the book, but it sure makes for one hell of a fascinating story. I'm addicted and I hate being addicted to a story that's not yet finished. I hope that we get to see a more mature Jemma. I admit she grated on stubborn and immature too many times to count, but isn't that what being a teenager is all about?. Especially when you factor in personal trauma and serious trust issues, even though she seems a bit too trusting at times. I hope that you deliver soon. I can't wait.

    1. LOL! I love this. I won't lie, I'm quite pleased that I was able to shock you ;) As for Jemma, I think you hit it right on the nail. At the end of the day, she's still just a teenager that is navigating through a lot more trauma and drama than I'd know what to do with. She is going to make mistakes, but I think her heart is always in the right place. I'm excited for her growth in the next book (and throughout the series). Thank you so much for reading, and for reaching out! <3

  7. Ooh what if it isn't the Trace from the present who left Jemma to die? He can time travel, so it wouldn't be too hard for him to do that. Loved the book . I loved that none of ghe characters were perfect. I also liked the fact that the shady characters were shady and didn't give J a way out, she had to figure it out herself without the help of a "newly discovered power". I'm jonesing for a sequel cos this was one of the best books I've read. I just have to say thank you. Cos reading it was like eating chocolate after living on broccoli.

  8. Absolutely LOVE this book! I was expecting the typical YA supernatural book, but you managed to take things in a completely different direction. Trace broke MY heart at the end.....can't wait for the next one to see what happens! Reading his POV helped explain a few things of what he was thinking.....now I'm wondering if it was Future Trace that took the necklace.....hmmm.... :)
    More Trace POV's please!!!!

  10. This was a great book! I am glad to get the spoiler and see he loves her. I cannot wait to read what happens in next book and what she really ends up being. Great twist BTW:)!

  11. Great book! It's good to know that Trace wasn't completely evil. I'm sure he chose his sister over Jemma. Earlier in the book he asked if Jemma would do whatever it took to get her father back, even if it meant sacrificing innocents. Jemma and Taylor ended up being what he had to sacrifice. I think at this point it would be really hard for Trace and Jemma to reconcile even though he does care about her (as shown in this scene). How can she be with someone who basically left her to die? Even if it was to save his sister. I would like to see him seriously regret his decision in future books and try to redeem himself with her, but I don't think they should end up together.

However, I am looking forward to a more "badass" Jemma, which I hope to see in the next book. She was so naive in the first book and I would like to see a stronger version of her - standing up to Nikki, not getting walked over, fighting back basically.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I want to see Jemma fighting and less naive too. But I still think she and Trace should get together. The book ends too suddenly, there is a lot we don't know that could be behind Trace's decision. He was talking to Morgan when Jemma left the party, what if she had another vision and told him that was the way to act ?? And what about Jemma blood being different? Too many questions, can't Waite for next book!!

  13. Okay say it is trace from the future... Why does he need to leave Jem's for dead?
I was so addicted to this OMG I stayed up to midnight and then couldn't sleep till 1.30am I was to busy having my sicks blown off! I was just like what?!? what the hell Trace what the hell just happened it was soooo awesome!
I don't know how she could forgive him, I mean if it was for his siter, yeah okay, but the leaving her for dead part? No, just how he went about it, I know he said he was in love with her and to remember that, but he still gave them permission to kill her and Taylor, I don't care if he was sure as ice cream that she wouldn't be killed, in the real world that's kind of an ice breaker as far as relationships go.... I hope Jems gives him hell and I cant absolute wait for more.
    love Mikki x

  14. I just finished book 1 .... I'm sitting here like completely stunned by the sudden turn of events at the end!!! I can't wait for book 2, I haven't been able to find any release date for it though. Any idea when we can expect it?

  15. Okay, I finished this book at 12:30 last night then searched Amazon for a half hour looking for the next book, uugh!!I can't wait for the second book and INCREDIBLY pleased with this POV, because I too felt betrayed. One of the comments above has me thinking about that last fight scene, like maybe it is Trace doing his time traveling thing, because of the time standing still briefly. Anyway, looking forward to the next book!

  17. Oh my goodness! I love Trace so much but I kinda wanted to rip out his heart and beat him with it when he betrayed Jemma. So he does love her. THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT MORE CONFUSING. I am still in the first chapter of the second book and I am driving myself insane. We all love this series.

  20. Hi. I am Hail. 28 yo, single mother of two. Book FANATIC. I want to begin a blog of my own about the books I read for other fellow book lovers, as well as promoting my own book I am beginning to work on.. This series will most definitely be on my "must read" list.
Bianca. I have to say I LOVED the first book, and I just started the second. I am super excited to read the remainder of this series. You have brought SUCH an amazing world INTO the world of books! You have created such dianamic characters, and taken the supernatural relhm in a way I have never heard of. I love it. I Love the characters. Hell. I look forward to seeing every characters ' development (even Nikkis, which btw, I don't believe she is as horrible as she comes off...I think she is a scared teen living in a world full of obligations, and she is afraid of a ONE constant in her llif drifting from her...honestly, I think if she laid off the bitchiness, her and jemma Could find common ground and actually be friends. ) as for Trace. Ohhh my. Yummy! And I so hope he isn't a traitor. I hope we find he is actually.. ...working in the future with jemma. What he did was a necessity for the end game to end the way they need it to in the future. We shall see. I am excited nonetheless.
You, Bianca, have gone to the top of my list as my favorite authors. Your up there with Jenn Armentrout! I can't wait to see what is next! I can't wait to see what sets Jemma apart from the rest of them. Whatever it is, I'm sure it will be jaw dropping and amazing.
